The East Gippsland Historical Re-enactment Society is a regular participant in the Victorian Medieval Festival, held at Kryall Castle and the Geelong Medieval Festival.
Students participate in target shooting using safe, foam-headed arrows and receive individual coaching from our experienced instructors, with historical anecdotes.
Our incursions are tailored to suit school needs and the educational curriculum, offering a hands-on experience for students in various historical crafts, games and even trying on armour!
Our school incursions invariably include a combat display for education and entertainment purposes. This feature is particularly popular with students!
Most EGHRS members are ardent crafters producing a high standard of historically inspired clothing, costume accessories, weapons and armour as well as various articles needed for medieval feasting and camping.
East Gippsland Historical Re-enactment Society members meet regularly to practice combat with replica weapons including swords, spears, quarterstaffs and daggers. This training ensures quality combat performances at events and incursions.
EGHRS members enjoy nothing more than getting together to celebrate with a medieval feast! Twice a year, authentic dishes are prepared and brought to share whilst we recognise various achievements and tournament champions. During the warmer weather we often hold a weekend re-enactment camp in co-operation with an interstate group, exchanging knowledge, ideas and tips
The bottom line is we enjoy what we do; engaging with the local community, sharing our various skills and always learning more about medieval history through research and re-enactment!
Setting up and packing down are an integral part of every event when it's all hands on deck!
EGHRS members are able to hand forge weapons and armour as well has handy items such as flint & steel strikers, cutlery and cloak clasps. The forge itself is portable and often forms part of our demonstrations.
Teaching Viking and medieval games such as Hnefatafl are a common part of our event and school incursion displays.
The Group meets from 10am to 12noon every Sunday (except the 4th Sunday of the month) at the Roderick Pavillion, Howitt Park in Bairnsdale, Victoria. If you want to know more about what we do, come and see us!
Our next scheduled event is the Wild Cherry Spring Fair on 24th October in the grounds of the Wild Cherry; 28, McKean St., Bairnsdale, starting at 9am. We will have crafting and forging displays, interactive games, armour to try on, an exciting combat demonstration and even a working trebuchet!
In November, we're off to participate in the Geelong Medieval Festival at the Geelong Showgrounds on 7th - 8th November with displays and demonstrations!
